The 16th-century seer Michel de Nostredame, more commonly recognised as Nostradamus, is believed to have predicted alarming global events for 2026, featuring political turmoil and fresh tensions between East and West.
Yet it’s not entirely bleak, as the French mystic’s forecasts also suggest a possible era of renewal and a fresh worldview.
Nostradamus, whose work “Les Propheties” appeared in 1555, is claimed to have foretold significant global occurrences including 9/11, Princess Diana’s tragic end, the nuclear attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and more latterly, the Covid-19 outbreak.
His writings, containing 942 prophecies presented as verses, are penned in a blend of cryptic Latin expressions and archaic French, rendering them challenging to interpret. Below are some of his prophecies for the year ahead.
A particular passage from Nostradamus, labelled I:26, declares: “The great swarm of bees will arise… by night the ambush…” Numerous interpreters suggest these bees represent influential leaders, such as Donald Trump or Vladimir Putin, who might secure triumphs in the forthcoming year. This could potentially allude to Trump’s Gaza agreement or Russia’s prospective success against Ukraine, reports the Express.
Another verse, penned in standard French, states: “Because of the favour that the city will show… the Ticino will overflow with blood…” Ticino, Switzerland’s southernmost canton, is renowned for its woodlands, alpine lakes, and icy peaks. Whilst the precise interpretation of this location-specific prophecy remains ambiguous, certain theories propose that Nostradamus is alluding to fresh European warfare, potentially between neighbouring nations, given that Ticino shares a border with northern Italy.
Nostradamus’s quatrain, “Seven months great war, people dead through evil/Rouen, Evreux the King will not fail,” has been decoded as another clash spearheaded by two obstinate leaders who believe themselves invincible.
This interpretation could connect to Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky, who continues pursuing backing to resist Russia, or Donald Trump, who has claimed the moniker “King Donald.”
The seer also penned, “When Mars rules his path among the stars, human blood will sprinkle the sanctuary. Three fires rise from the eastern sides, while the West loses its light in silence.”
Given that Mars represents the ancient Roman deity of warfare, this forecast indicates that 2026 will witness another year dominated by strife, featuring considerable anguish and a possible confrontation between Western Europe and Asia.
Some interpret Nostradamus’s prophecy of the West losing its “light in silence” as potentially relating to the advancement of AI in countries such as China and Japan. As these nations enhance their AI capabilities, there are escalating concerns that robots may replace human jobs, possibly leading to economic difficulties in the West.

Despite the ominous predictions, Nostradamus concluded his 2026 prophecies on an uplifting note, stating, “Shadows will fall, but the man of light will rise. And the stars will guide those who look within.”
This implies that following the crises of war and fire, there could be a period of renewal and a fresh leader or approach to the world, perhaps involving a reshaped world order or a shift away from technology towards deeper human connection.
