WESTMINSTER, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – The City of Westminster learned on Wednesday that portions of its information technology (IT) systems were compromised in a cyber attack.
City officials notified the Westminster Police Department, which requested assistance from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
Officials said that measures have been taken to protect against future cyber-attacks. At this time, it is believed that no utility customer data, utility customer financial information through the online payment portal, city personnel data, or other personal data was compromised. Public Safety and Utilities operations remain minimally impacted.
Though the cyber attack resulted in a loss of public funds, city officials said that payments will be made to contractors, staff, and creditors.
FOX Carolina asked how much money was taken, but the city declined to share.
City officials are actively pursuing available options through insurance providers, including crime and cyber policies.
The investigation remains active.
