Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has described China as a key global interlocutor capable of helping to resolve major international conflicts, including tensions involving Iran and the war in Ukraine, urging Beijing to take a more active diplomatic role.

Speaking on April 14 after a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping during a visit to China, Sánchez said he sees few other actors with comparable influence in efforts to de-escalate current crises, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media

“I find it very difficult to find other interlocutors, beyond China, who can resolve this situation created in Iran and the Strait of Hormuz,” he said.

Sánchez is in China for his fourth visit in just over three years, as Spain seeks to deepen both political and commercial ties with the world’s second-largest economy.

During his remarks, the Spanish leader also called for accountability for violations of international law and described the situation in Gaza in stark terms.

“International law is being violated today, fundamentally by one country: the government of Israel,” he said. “There is also an absolutely illegal response from the Iranian regime regarding a war that we have described from the very beginning as a mistake and an illegality.”
