OpenAI Launches GPT-5.4-Cyber for Security Vulnerabilities in Limited Release

OpenAI has begun a limited release of a new artificial intelligence model designed to identify software security vulnerabilities, according to Bloomberg. The model, called GPT-5.4-Cyber, is intended to help organizations find and fix software issues. The company stated the model imposes fewer restrictions on how users can interrogate it for this specific purpose.

Access is initially being granted to some participants in the Trusted Access for Cyber program, an initiative launched in February. OpenAI plans to start with hundreds of test users before expanding to thousands in the near future. This development follows an announcement one week prior by rival Anthropic PBC, which released its own specialized AI tool named Mythos.

Anthropic stated its model focuses on finding and exploiting vulnerabilities in operating systems and web browsers. That company limited its release to a group of trusted partners, which included Amazon.com Inc., Apple Inc., and Microsoft Corp., with the aim of helping them secure their systems. The introduction of Mythos reportedly raised concerns among financial institutions and government bodies.

During a recent meeting convened by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, Wall Street executives were advised to treat the Mythos model as a serious matter. The Treasury Department’s technology team is also seeking access to Mythos to search for vulnerabilities. The broader competitive landscape involves both OpenAI and Anthropic working to advance AI models with wider capabilities and secure business adoption.

As AI models improve at coding and security analysis, there are increasing worries about potential misuse by malicious actors. AI technology is already being utilized to facilitate cyberattacks.
