Pentagon expands classified AI work with major tech companies

The Pentagon said it reached deals with seven major technology companies to bring advanced artificial intelligence into classified military operations.

Officials announced the agreements on Friday and said the group included OpenAI, Google and SpaceX.

The move followed a recent contract dispute involving AI startup Anthropic. The Defense Department labeled Anthropic a supply-chain risk after that dispute.

Anthropic had concerns about how its AI could be used. The company was worried the technology would be used for domestic surveillance or autonomous weapons without human oversight.

The Pentagon said it was using the technology for lawful purposes.
