In response to recent remarks by Mark Johnson, chargé d’affaires at the US Embassy in Mexico , who claimed that “the United States will not tolerate dependence on countries like China” for critical technologies like semiconductors and that “the US needs Mexico to play a key role in this regard” at US-Mexico Semiconductor Collaboration Forum, the Chinese Embassy in Mexico said on Wednesday that such remarks have completely exposed the US mindset to impose its geopolitical competition on others and China expresses strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition to this.
The so-called “not tolerate dependence” rhetoric is essentially a blatant practice of trade barriers, trade threats, and trade bullying. Rather than caring about Mexico’s development needs, the US wants Mexico to serve as a geopolitical tool in industrial and supply chain issues,” the Chinese embassy said.
The United States fears fair competition and rejects win-win cooperation. Whenever it sees progress in key industries, it rushes to label other countries as “dependence” and resorts to threats, attempting to maintain its monopoly through intimidation and pressure. This practice not only undermines the international economic and trade order, but also harms the interests of countries in the Global South, including Mexico, and ultimately erodes the United States’ own credibility, according to the embassy’s statement.
China advocates a multipolar world characterized by equality and order, promotes inclusive economic globalization, and firmly opposes trade barriers as well as economic and trade coercion, it said.
The US’ attempt to obstruct cooperation is like “a mantis trying to stop a chariot,” which will ultimately prove futile. “We urge US officials to abandon zero-sum thinking, respect the global trade order, and engage in normal cooperation with other nations, rather than resorting to domineering rhetoric of “not tolerate” that seeks to dictate terms to others,” the statement said.
