COCC seminar to teach how to spot AI-generated scams

BEND, Ore. — Central Oregon Community College is hosting a free cyber security seminar next week to help people protect themselves from cyber criminals.

Cyber security students and faculty will discuss how hackers use manipulative tactics to steal money. They will also cover voice and video impersonations generated by artificial intelligence.

“Just prior to last year, we didn’t see a lot of personal deepfakes, and today, with just 30 seconds of audio, a hacker can create a deepfake audio that sounds like your grandchild, sounds like your child, and commit a scam with that information,” computer and information systems professor Eric Magidson said.

“The diversity of scams and new scams that are coming out year after year have exponentially grown more and have gotten more unique in a way,” cybersecurity student Marc Vannucci said.

The seminar is happening on Thursday, Oct. 30, 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. at the Hitchcock Auditorium at COCC’s Bend campus. No registration is required.
