California Governor Gavin Newsom unveils Quantum California initiative aimed to boost local tech jobs, advance quantum technology

BERKELEY, Calif. – California leaders gathered at the University of California, Berkeley on Friday to launch “Quantum California,” a statewide initiative aimed at advancing quantum technology.

Officials say this effort brings together government, academia, and industry to foster innovation and job creation in the Golden State.

“California has always been the place where the future happens first,” said Gov. Gavin Newsom. “With Quantum California, we’re ensuring the next revolution in technology starts here, too.”

Governor Newsom’s office, in collaboration with the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz) and the University of California Office of the President, hosted the event. It follows the recent signing of legislation and funding to maintain California’s leadership in the quantum industry.

Quantum technology, including computing, sensing, and communication, has transformative potential. It promises to revolutionize fields like medicine, climate research, and artificial intelligence.

During the event, experts discussed breakthroughs and use cases in quantum technology, focusing on real-world applications such as drug discovery and advanced manufacturing.

California is uniquely positioned as a leader in this sector, housing both National Science Foundation and Department of Energy quantum research centers. It is also home to top quantum talent and leading companies.

“Quantum California brings together some of the world’s best researchers, most successful businesses, and top state leaders to advance technology, science, and economic strength — and ensure that California remains the world’s innovation hub,” said University of California President James B. Milliken.

Governor Newsom also recently signed legislation to support the quantum industry, including Assembly Bill 940, authored by Assemblymember Buffy Wicks. This bill will help transform quantum research into industry output, supported by a $4 million investment from the state’s budget.

“Quantum California is about turning discovery into opportunity,” said Dee Dee Myers, Senior Advisor to Gov. Newsom and Director of GO-Biz. “No other place in the world has the ability to bring together this depth of talent, technology and creativity as a force for economic progress.”

California’s economy is a national powerhouse, leading in new business starts, venture capital funding, and more. The Quantum California initiative is set to further strengthen the state’s position in the global technology landscape.
