Duplin County Sheriff’s Office warns of flash drive scam installing malware

DUPLIN COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – The Duplin County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public of a flash drive scam that could compromise their computers.

Scammers will leave USB drives in public spaces, such as parking lots and coffee shops, in hopes that someone will plug one in to find the owner, which then installs malware.

According to a news release, the sheriff’s office says they’ve received reports of these drives being mailed and made to look like they’re from official companies.

Anyone who finds an unknown USB drive should trash it or hand it to law enforcement.
