About $1 million was stolen from the Voorheesville Central School District’s construction fund in a cyber-fraud attack, the district announced Thursday on its website.
The district said it learned of the unauthorized transfer of funds on Oct. 8, and is working with State Police, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and U.S. Secret Service to recover it.
“We have been informed that approximately $750,000 of the funds have been successfully recovered to date, and efforts continue to recover the remaining amount,” the district said in its statement.
If the remaining funds cannot be found, the district said it will seek reimbursement through its cyber-insurance coverage.
“The district is also conducting a thorough review of its internal procedures and protocols to further strengthen safeguards against the increasingly sophisticated threats posed by cybercrime,” the district stated, adding that administrators and school board members are committed to transparency and resolving the matter.
