PLATTEVILLE, Wis. (WMTV) – All schools in the Platteville School District are closed Monday after a cyber swatting incident.
In a Facebook post, the district said they made the decision out of an abundance of caution to ensure the safety of students and staff.
In an update Monday, the Platteville School District said law enforcement determined the threat was not credible.
The school district said an online message that referenced a bomb threat as a means of extortion was sent to the district.
The Platteville School District thanked the student who came forward with the tip about the message.
“Safety has been and will continue to be a top priority for the Platteville School District,” the district said in a statement. “Thank you for helping us make our schools a safe, inclusive learning community for every student, every day.”
School district officials noted state and federal privacy laws prevent them from releasing the name of the student or students who made the threat, or anyone who was named in the threat.
The school district also would not release any information on if someone faces potential suspension or expulsion, but noted it is up to the police department to determine if any criminal violations were made.
All after-school practices will go on as scheduled Monday, officials said.
