The Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes have added additional safeguards to their networks following an attempted cyber breach.
Governor of the Cheyenne & Arapaho Tribe, Reggie Wassana, said that on Dec. 8, 2025, their Tribal IT security systems detected suspicious activity within the network. Wassana said the Cheyenne & Arapaho IT Department immediately isolated and shut down systems to stop the activity.
At this time, Wassana said that data belonging to tribal members, employees or partners was compromised.
A forensic review was done by independent cybersecurity experts to strengthen the system. This review did temporarily shut down some services.
Some of the safeguards added to systems include:
- Expanded network monitoring and threat detection tools
- System-wide security updates and architecture enhancements
- Strengthened continuity protocols to minimize service disruptions in the future
- Ongoing third-party penetration testing and validation
Wassana said most systems were restored by early January.
The Cheyenne & Arapaho Tribes said it will continue to monitor their systems and coordinate with cybersecurity professionals and federal partners as part of ongoing protective measures.
