New Britain City Hall dealing with suspected cyber attack

NEW BRITAIN, CT. (WFSB) – New Britain City Hall is dealing with a suspected cyber attack.

The city confirmed in a statement to Channel 3 that the internet went down at around 5:00 a.m. yesterday morning.

There has been no impact to the rest of the city and public safety services such as police and fire resources are still working.

State and federal authorities were called to investigate the issue.

The Identity Theft Resource Center released their 2025 data breach report Thursday. It showed that data breaches increased by five percent over the last year and 79% over the past five years.

One of those incidents included a phishing attack that hit a New Haven High School.

“As we rely more and more on cyber ecosystems from online banking all the way to paying taxes online or requesting permits online, these systems become more and more attractive to attackers,” said Dr. Vahid Behzadan, Cybersecurity Associate Professor, University of New Haven.

He says that city governments and schools are soft targets for hackers.

“The municipal government systems store and the and have access to a high value and the other factor is municipal governments typically have limited resources, city else hold everything from tax records, Social Security numbers and utility data. But unfortunately, municipal IT departments often have to defend. This treasure drove on a fraction of the budget that the major bank or tech company has,” he continued.

A press conference will be held Friday morning at 10:00 a.m. with Mayor Bobby Sanchez to address the incident.
