According to the City of Greenville, certain systems were affected by a cyber attack on Aug. 5.
GREENVILLE, Texas — The city of Greenville reported a cyber incident affecting certain city technology systems earlier this month, officials said, prompting immediate action to secure networks and restore services.
City officials said the incident was identified on Aug. 5, and protective measures were implemented immediately. Affected systems were isolated, law enforcement was contacted, and a third-party cybersecurity firm was brought in to mitigate the damage, officials said.
“…at this time, it appears some internal files were impacted,” the City said in a statement. “…we have no evidence showing that personal information belonging to employees or citizens was impacted by the incident.”
Greenville is the latest North Texas city to be hit by cyber criminals. Last year, Richardson was impacted by a similar attack.
City officials said significant progress has been made in restoring files and systems, though some services remain temporarily offline as a precaution. Residents may experience intermittent outages or busy signals when calling city offices, though 911 services continue to operate normally.
The Greenville Electric Utility System (GEUS) has been unable to accept online payments due to the incident, officials said. Officials thanked residents for their patience as work continues to fully restore city systems and said additional updates will be provided as information is verified.
