Online safety: Florida residents urged to follow cyber safety advice this October

October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, which aims to boost public awareness and promote best practices for online safety and security.

The basics include creating strong passwords, installing software updates, recognizing phishing scams, and securing connected devices like doorbells and smartphones.

Cybersecurity expert Jordan Kelly highlighted the importance of these measures.

“When everything in our lives is connected and online, the risk is pretty significant,” said Kelly. “We think obviously about our bank accounts. We think about our email accounts, but we have such a really interconnected world now that there could be significant impacts if we ourselves are victims of cyber incidents.”

Kelly stressed the need for vigilance.

“Individuals are falling victim to somewhat simple scams, and that’s why we really need to have our vigilance up,” said Kelly.

By following these tips, you can safeguard your identity and financial information. There is plenty of research available to help protect yourself online.
