San Diego City College is leading education on cyber security in California with a new four-year bachelor’s degree in Cyber Defense and Analysis. The curriculum provides students with the skills and knowledge to protect digital infrastructure and strengthen cybersecurity across most industries and government agencies.
WATCH HERE“It’s critical we have some way to ensure the education we provide is at the same level students would get going to a traditional four-year college, and we are now a four-year college,” saidDavid Kennemer, the program’s director.

The City College campus is in the congressional district of democratic U.S. Rep. Scott Peters. Monday, during a pubic event, he said he worked for two years to get federal funding to expand research and development at the school.
Rep. Peters presented a ceremonial check for $1,031,000 million in federal funding to create a CyberLab Incubator.
It is described as a training hub providing students with real-world experience simulating ransomware attacks or debilitating infrastructure crimes in a safe, secure environment. Although the program is potentially still years from operation, the timing of this announcement emphasizes a national priority given the war with Iran.

The congressman said he secured the Congressionally Directed Funding in the recently-approved 2026 federal budget.

At the moment, many students use the campus library to do school work, research, and collaboration. That is an environment much like the newly-funded cyber lab incubator will provide some day.
Monday morning, Ed Claudio was using a library computer to write a religious studies research paper. He will graduate in May and transfer to San Diego State University to complete a degree.
“Computers and software are already beyond us. Like AI it’s already talking to us, having one-on-one conversations, and watching us. What can we do? It’s just the future,” Claudio said.
