To enhance an already strong cyber security system, Casper Police Department applies for grant

Casper, Wyo. – Casper City Council recently agreed to seek a State Homeland Security Program Grant for the Casper Police Department and the city’s Information Technology Division.

In today’s day and age, it seems technology is ever changing and upgrading by the minute. That’s why Casper City Council unanimously agreed to seek a grant related to cyber security to help improve the city’s infrastructure related to connectivity. “Essentially we’re trying to help our community with funds that are available, without obligating the general fund in the future.” Casper Police Departments, Captain Jeremy Tremel explains the grant money would be used to purchase upgraded firewalls, security software, and more to help bolster Casper’s cyber security. “We’re just trying to provide an extra level of protection for our community to ensure that public safety operations continue without any impact.”

Tremmel says while he has full faith in the cities current cyber security, having an extra layer of protection is necessary. “We’ve seen across the country, a number of incidents where communities have been targeted especially areas of public safety, and health care, and those types of things.” Tremmel explains while this grant will be used right away if approved, it will also allow them to keep their eyes on the horizon with what could be coming next. “You know at some point we’re going to need to be able to replace some of our equipment, and this grant is an opportunity where we can replace equipment in the future, again without impacting the general fund.”

The Casper Police Department applied for an $85K Homeland Security Grant, and it would completely cover the cost of all the upgrades, and no match will be required.
