In an age where artificial intelligence is transforming our homes, workplaces and communities, Wilson Community College is leading an important conversation. On Thursday, Oct. 2, the college will host “Cyber Safe in the Gigabit City: Is Wilson Ready for AI?” — a free event designed to help residents understand both the opportunities and risks that come with AI and broader cybersecurity issues.
The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Eagles Center (Building G, Room 237) on Wilson Community College’s campus and will also be available virtually via Zoom. Registration is required. For participants who attend in person, a complimentary lunch will be provided.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Attendees can expect a program that balances technical insights with practical advice. Topics will include the following:
• How AI is reshaping local business and infrastructure, including ethical and workforce implications
• Practical cybersecurity tips for everyday life — on your phone, online, in your home — that help protect personal data and privacy
• Guidance for local businesses, industry experts, families and individuals on staying ahead of cyber risks as AI and other technologies evolve
WHY IT MATTERS
With AI tools becoming increasingly integrated into daily life from recommendation engines to smart home devices and automated decision-making, understanding the risks (and how to mitigate them) is more critical than ever. Cyber threats are growing in sophistication, and many are only now emerging. This event aims to raise awareness, empower citizens and foster resilience in our community.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
• Residents who use connected devices, social media or AI-powered services in everyday life
• Local business owners and employees who are concerned about security risk, data protection and regulatory/ethical implications
• Students and educators seeking to build their knowledge of AI and cybersecurity
• IT professionals, civic leaders and community advocates who want to help guide local policy or institutional readiness
