North Korea links hypersonic missile drill to ‘recent geopolitical crisis’

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has linked a weekend military drill featuring a hypersonic missile system to an unnamed “recent geopolitical crisis” — an apparent reference to the U.S. toppling of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

Kim, who oversaw Sunday’s “combat drill,” said “important achievements” have been made in preparing his nuclear forces “for an actual war,” the state-run Korean Central News Agency reported Monday.

“We must continuously upgrade the military means, especially offensive weapon systems,” Kim said, calling the “constant mobilization of our strategic offensive means … an important and effective mode of exercising war deterrence.”
