Travel in Asia Pacific transformed by demographics, geopolitics, and rail growth

A new report from Phocuswright has found that structural shifts are reshaping travel demand and competition across the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region, marking what it describes as the most significant realignment in more than a decade.

The study, A Market Rewired: Ten Structural Shifts Redefining Asia Pacific Travel, highlights diverging demographic trends, geopolitical tensions, and changing mobility patterns as key drivers. Younger markets such as India, Indonesia, and Malaysia are entering peak consumption years, while ageing economies including Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan face population decline. The report notes this has created “multiple demographic futures operating simultaneously”.

Travel companies are increasingly prioritising partnerships over ownership as customer acquisition becomes more complex. The report suggests brands are expanding distribution through alliances with technology platforms and payment systems rather than competing solely on price or inventory.

Geopolitical developments are also affecting demand. Border tensions between Cambodia and Thailand contributed to a decline in arrivals to Cambodia in late 2025, while weaker Chinese demand is expected to impact Japan’s inbound market.

Rail is gaining share, with bookings projected to rise modestly by 2028, while short-term rentals are expected to account for a quarter of accommodation bookings.

The Intentional Traveler report from the Luxury Group by Marriott International recently revealed changing behaviour among high-net-worth travellers across seven APAC markets.
