As global tensions continue to rise, it’s not unreasonable to think about a backup plan. Israel’s conflict in Gaza is morphing into a regional war with Iran, Africa is dealing with a string of civil wars, and Russia‘s invasion of Ukraine shows no signs of letting up.
North Korea recently declared its plans to send 10,000 troops to support Putin’s beleaguered military. Major world powers are now tangled in wars worldwide, with China expanding its influence over African war zones while NATO countries back Ukraine’s ongoing fight against Putin.

Certain countries emerge as safe havens from conflict. Tech whizzes from Silicon Valley are already preparing for the worst, claiming they have deals to charter private jets in a doomsday scenario.

New Zealand
One such place is New Zealand. Silicon Valley billionaire Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, previously told the New Yorker he had a deal with PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel to escape the United States and seek shelter in New Zealand if things took a turn for the worse, according to the Mirror.
They would charter a private jet to Thiel’s 477-acre property. New Zealand, situated a mere 932 miles from Australia, is one of the most remote places on the planet.

New Zealand has been identified as a prime sanctuary for those seeking to avoid the potential devastation of a third world war. Recognized for being among the “safest places” during nuclear warfare, RethinkingSecurity points out that New Zealand is “relatively buffered from nuclear-winter effects, as it produces a surplus of food, so starvation is unlikely.”
Similar to New Zealand, Iceland also stands out as a compelling refuge, despite its cooler climate. What awaits visitors?

Summer temperatures in Iceland rarely exceed a modest 14C, while winter nights can drop to a frigid -25C.
Iceland
Yet, Iceland’s remote location, positioned approximately 500 miles off Scotland’s northwest coast and around 590 miles from western Norway, combined with its modest population of roughly 380,000 people in 2022, along with abundant natural resources, including substantial renewable energy supplies, makes it an attractive haven from the threat of WW3.
Chile
Chile represents a promising safe haven in South America for anyone looking for shelter during catastrophic events. Santiago, Chile’s capital, home to more than five million residents, will feel familiar to those from the United States or United Kingdom given Chile’s strong ties with both nations.
The city’s appeal as a wartime refuge is further enhanced by its abundant natural resources and impressive coastline, which holds the record for being the world’s longest.
Fiji
For those seeking to flee the turmoil and find peace in warmer climates, Fiji is the perfect getaway. This Pacific Island nation, much like New Zealand, is significantly distanced from most other countries.
Located 1,300 miles north of New Zealand, Fiji is home to over 100 inhabited islands. While it may not be as economically developed as some other nations on this list, Fiji has a smaller population, with only about 90,000 people residing in its capital, Suva, and no more than 900,000 inhabitants nationwide.
However, it does offer access to natural resources, an important factor for anyone planning to survive an apocalypse. Additionally, Fiji maintains strong ties with the UK, owing to its past as a former British colony.
