Lula and Sanchez Host Democracy Summit in Barcelona

According to Euronews, the President of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, expressed understanding for a stance against war during a meeting with Spain’s Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez. The meeting occurred in Barcelona at the start of a two-day visit centered on a summit.

Lula referenced global conflicts and a perceived new arms race. The two leaders, known for their progressive politics, were expected to sign agreements on economic, technological, and social matters during their bilateral meeting on Friday.

This meeting precedes a series of larger gatherings in Barcelona over the weekend. The first event is the IV Meeting in Defence of Democracy, a forum initiated by Brazil and Spain in 2024 to address challenges to participatory democracy. Previous editions were held at the United Nations and in Chile.

Lula stated that the multilateral summit should not be viewed as a meeting against the current President of the United States, despite both he and Sanchez having criticized his positions. The focus, he said, would be on discussing the state of democracy.

Sanchez’s government has reportedly closed its airspace to US planes involved in a specific conflict and denied the use of jointly operated bases in southern Spain for related actions. Separately, Lula recently expressed solidarity with the Pope following criticisms from the US President.

The democracy summit will include numerous other national leaders from Europe, Africa, and Latin America. The participation of Mexico’s president follows a recent acknowledgment by Spain’s King regarding historical abuses during the conquest of the Americas.

Many attendees will remain for a second event, the inaugural Global Progressive Mobilisation, later on Saturday. That gathering, expected to draw thousands, will feature speeches from both Sanchez and Lula and include discussions on issues like wage inequality. The idea for this event was discussed last year by Sanchez and a former Swedish Prime Minister.

Sanchez’s schedule follows a recent trip to Beijing for meetings with China’s leader.
