WASHINGTON (TNND) — President Donald Trump announced that the U.S. will withdraw from 66 international organizations meant to foster multinational cooperation as part of an ongoing review to determine which serve or contradict U.S. national interests.

The executive order includes leaving dozens of United Nations-related bodies and other global forums that focus on international security, law, trade, economics, human rights, and other issues the Trump administration deems “woke.”

Secretary of State Marco Rubio pointed to waste, mismanagement, and redundancy as the reasons for the withdrawal.

He also suggested that having U.S. representatives participate “with little to nothing to show for it” was not worth the ” blood, sweat, and treasure of the American people.”

“These withdrawals keep a key promise President Trump made to Americans – we will stop subsidizing globalist bureaucrats who act against our interests,” Rubio said in a statement. “The Trump Administration will always put America and Americans first.”

As a result, funding, membership, and participation will cease for most of the organizations and the U.S. will no longer have voting rights, influence or decision-making roles.

Critics warn that leaving dozens of international organizations could weaken U.S. global leadership, undermine cooperation on global challenges and create a vacuum that rival powers like China could fill.

“We will not continue expending resources, diplomatic capital, and the legitimizing weight of our participation in institutions that are irrelevant to or in conflict with our interests,” Rubio explained. “We reject inertia and ideology in favor of prudence and purpose. We seek cooperation where it serves our people and will stand firm where it does not.”

The move follows the Trump administration pulling the United States out of the World Health Organization (WHO), the Paris Climate Agreement, UNESCO and the U.N. Human Rights Council.
