UN Warns Record 61 Global Conflicts Threaten International Peace
    …………….

The United Nations has warned of an unprecedented deterioration in global peace and security, reporting that the number of conflicts worldwide reached 61 in 2024 — the highest level since 1946. Officials said the surge underscores the urgent need to strengthen the effectiveness of UN peacekeeping operations.

Speaking at a Security Council meeting on the future of peace operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, described peacekeeping missions as a “lifeline for millions.” He cautioned, however, that the increasing number and complexity of conflicts — often involving proxy actors — make sustainable political solutions harder to achieve.

He stressed that missions can only succeed with strong political backing from the Security Council and host nations, alongside clear mandates, timely funding, and prioritised goals. Protecting civilians, he added, remains the central measure of success but cannot be sustained indefinitely without durable political settlements.

Rosemary DiCarlo, UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, noted that current missions face fragmented geopolitical landscapes and overlapping conflicts with regional and international dimensions. She warned that weak host country cooperation and limited Security Council support undermine mission mandates, urging renewed multilateral approaches to address the root causes of conflict.
