The college football transfer portal is now officially open.
For the next two weeks, there will be unprecedented movement as there is just one transfer portal window ahead of next season. Many quarterbacks across the country have already expressed their intentions to enter the transfer portal or announced they will be looking for a new school. That includes DJ Lagway (Florida), Sam Leavitt (Arizona State), Dylan Raiola (Nebraska) and Drew Mestemaker (transferring from North Texas to Oklahoma State), all of whom will surely be getting a big payday from their new school.

We’ll be keeping track of all the notable names who are changing schools in the space below as college football prepares for its biggest transfer frenzy yet. The transfer portal will close on Jan. 16.

The Red Raiders just landed a huge quarterback in the portal. Former Cincinnati QB Brendan Sorsby, frequently considered the top player in the transfer portal, is headed to Lubbock, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel. Lane Kiffin and LSU wanted him, but couldn’t pull it off.

In a likely sign of Fernando Mendoza’s NFL Draft status, Indiana has signed TCU QB Josh Hoover out of the transfer portal, according to ESPN.
Hoover was widely considered one of the top QBs available this offseason.

Kansas State linebacker Austin Romaine announced Sunday that he was signing with Texas Tech.
Romaine has been one of the best linebackers in the Big 12 over the past two seasons. He had 96 tackles over 13 games in 2024 and 66 tackles in nine games in 2025.

Notre Dame’s Kenny Minchey has committed to Nebraska, according to ESPN.
Nebraska had long been seen as the favorite to land Minchey, who was the No. 2 QB behind CJ Carr for the Fighting Irish in 2025. Minchey is the favorite to be the Huskers’ starter in 2026 after Dylan Raiola entered the transfer portal.

Georgia has picked up an impact transfer in the secondary, as Clemson’s Khalil Barnes is transferring to the Bulldogs, according to ESPN.
Barnes has 139 tackles across 37 games in three seasons with the Tigers. He didn’t have an interception over 10 games in 2025, but had seven interceptions in his first two years with the team.

James Madison QB Alonza Barnett III is heading to the Big 12.
Per On3, Barnett has signed with UCF. Barnett led the Dukes to a College Football Playoff appearance in 2025 and has been the team’s starter for the past two seasons.
This season, Barnett threw for over 2,800 yards, rushed for nearly 600 yards and had 38 total touchdowns.

After a year at Wisconsin, Billy Edwards is heading back east.
The former Badger and Maryland Terrapin is signing with North Carolina. Edwards was Wisconsin’s Week 1 starter in 2025 but suffered a knee injury in the opener and made just one more appearance the rest of the season.
In 2024, Edwards was 273-of-420 passing for 2,881 yards, 15 TDs and nine interceptions.
Belichick and UNC added former South Alabama QB Gio Lopez via the transfer portal in the spring and, with Lopez expected to stay in Chapel Hill, he’ll compete with Edwards for the starting job.

Wisconsin has moved to solve their quarterback issues.
According to ESPN, Old Dominion QB Colton Joseph is joining the Badgers. Joseph was 173-of-290 passing for 2,624 yards and 21 TDs with 10 interceptions in 2025 while also rushing 158 times for 1,007 yards. Joseph averaged over 15 yards a completion and had 34 total touchdowns.

Louisville has added former Ohio State QB Lincoln Kienholz, according to On3.
Kienholz spent three seasons with the Buckeyes and was the backup to Julian Sayin in 2025. He appeared in seven games and attempted 14 passes. He got the most playing time of his career in the 2023 Cotton Bowl when he replaced an injured Devin Brown.

Kentucky QB Cutter Boley is heading to Tempe, according to On3.
Boley took over as Kentucky’s starter during the 2025 season and appeared in 11 games. He was 198-of-301 passing for 2,160 yards and 15 TDs with 12 interceptions. A redshirt freshman this past season, Boley has three seasons of eligibility remaining.
His arrival at ASU could be the first step in a QB trade of sorts. Kentucky is reportedly one of the frontrunners for former ASU QB Sam Leavitt.

Iowa State’s post-Matt Campbell era has a new passer in town with Arkansas State’s Jaylen Raynor, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel. The rising senior led the Sun Belt in passing yards this season while posting 423 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground.
He’ll reunite with former Arkansas State offensive coordinator Keith Heckendorf, the Cyclones’ new QB coach.

Former North Texas head coach Eric Morris will have Drew Mestemaker under center again in 2026 — at Oklahoma State.
That’s where Mestemaker committed Saturday, according to multiple reports.
Mestemaker piloted North Texas to a program-record 12 wins during the 2025 season while leading the nation with 312.8 passing yards per game.
He also posted a 34:9 touchdown-to-interception ratio. He picked apart defenses throughout the American. Now he’ll try to translate his success to the Big 12.

Don’t be surprised if or even when USF QB Byrum Brown commits to Auburn.
According to On3, Brown is visiting Auburn on Sunday. The Tigers hired USF coach Alex Golesh at the end of the season after firing Hugh Freeze.
Brown was exceptionally productive in 2025 under Golesh. He completed two-thirds of his passes and threw for over 3,000 yards and rushed for over 1,000 yards in 12 games.

Texas A&M quarterback Marcel Reed doubled down on his return for the 2026 season Friday night.
Reed revealed he’d be coming back while on “Outta Pocket with RGIII” last month. Now, after an agonizing first-round College Football Playoff loss to Miami, Reed has confirmed that he will in fact be sticking around College Station.
