Chief Stuart Cameron says his department was the first law enforcement agency on Long Island to use Star Chase – a GPS tracker that police can fire at a car so they don’t have to engage in a high-speed chase.
The technology was implemented three years ago, and it’s already been successful.
On Monday, police tried to pull over an unregistered car when the driver fled in her vehicle.
Dash-cam video shows the GPS tracker sticking to the offender’s car after an officer fired the projectile.
Police were then able track the vehicle and follow from a safer speed eventually arresting the driver.
“When law enforcement attempts to hold them accountable for their actions, they simply flee. They’re not apprehended, and they’re not held accountable,” Cameron said. “At Old Westbury, we want to hold everyone accountable that comes to Old Westbury to commit a crime. And we want to utilize every resource that we have available to do that.”
The chief says the technology helps them avoid high speed chases which can often be dangerous for police and other drivers on the road.
