WhatsApp on Wednesday announced that it is launching an app for the Apple Watch. This is the first time iPhone users will be able to use their Apple Watch to get call notifications, read full messages, and record and send voice messages through a dedicated Apple Watch app.
“This new experience will help you stay on top of your chats without needing to pull out your iPhone,” WhatsApp wrote in a blog post. “In addition to reading and responding to messages, for the first time, WhatsApp on Apple Watch will now support many requested features.”
In addition to the standard WhatsApp features that are a staple of the messaging app, users will also have the ability to react to messages and the option to see more of their chat history on-screen when reading messages. They will also see clearer images and stickers.
Meta notes that all your personal messages and calls are protected with end-to-end encryption. In the future, Meta plans to add more functionality to Apple Watches. To use WhatsApp on the Apple Watch, users will requires an Apple Watch Series 4 or later, running watchOS 10 or later.
For years, iPhone users had to find different ways to run WhatsApp on their Apple Watches. Although there was no official WhatsApp app for the Apple Watch, there were clever workarounds that allowed users to view and reply to WhatsApp messages right from their wrist – no phone-digging required.
The official Apple Watch app comes a few months after Meta, in May, debuted its iPad app, which allows users to make video and audio calls with up to 32 people, share their screen, and use both the front and rear cameras.

In fact, Snapchat also recently launched an app for the Apple Watch. The Snapchat app allows users to preview incoming messages and reply using the keyboard, Scribble, Dictation, or an emoji. However, the app only enables users to quickly respond to messages, not to view images or videos.
