ThedaCare Embraces New Technology to Improve Brain Tumor Treatment

A regional medical center has debuted a first-of-its-kind technology in our area to better treat brain tumors.

ThedaCare has announced that they are now offering NeuroBlate laser therapy and successfully utilized it to treat a patient for the first time earlier this month.

NeuroBlate uses an MRI machine to guide a “precisely-controlled laser probe to a treatment area to help ablate abnormal tissue while potentially minimizing damage to surrounding healthy areas.”

It is especially useful for the treatment of brain tumors in newly diagnosed patients, as well as deep-seated or hard-to-reach ones and recurrent tumors.

On just how transformative this new technology can be for physicians and patients, Dr. Joseph Bovi, a ThedaCare Radiation Oncologist, said, “This procedure may be a good alternative to treating a brain tumor or lesion through a large incision. For many patients, laser ablation may offer an important option when health status, age or tumor location makes traditional surgery too risky or when a less invasive approach is preferred.”

While Dr. Evan Krueger added, “Patients who undergo laser ablation may experience a shorter hospital stay, lower risk of complication and hospital readmission rates.”
