Oil Prices Remain Elevated as Peace Process Sputters in Iran War
What Happened
Notable events in the Iran war over the past week:
- The Israel-Lebanon ceasefire comes under severe strain. Previously intermittent exchanges of fire in Southern Lebanon escalated over the weekend with a major Hezbollah offensive and Israeli counterattack. Axios reported on April 29 that President Trump has advised Prime Minister Netanyahu to limit operations to surgical strikes and avoid ‘[knocking] down buildings’ due to the bad optics for Israel. The ceasefire, which is technically between the Lebanon government and Israel, was last extended on April 23 and is set to expire on May 14. Its importance to the overall peace process is secondary at present though given that the Strait of Hormuz remains closed due to the US blockade, or ‘pirate’ armada, patrolling the Arabian Sea.
- President Trump plays for time as economic pressures mount. The choices available to President Trump haven’t changed. One is the political humiliation of accepting a new status quo that is worse than before the war regarding the Strait or Iran’s nuclear program. The other is going all-in on a ground war, a plan that is politically, economically, and perhaps militarily untenable.
