Kentwood Public Schools: Student put malicious software into system that caused technology disruption

Law enforcement is now investigating the situation. KPS said their connectivity issues were isolated and have since been resolved.

KENTWOOD, Mich. — Kentwood Public Schools (KPS) leaders say a recent technology disruption was caused by a student putting malware into the school’s systems.

Earlier this week, 13 ON YOUR SIDE received reports of KPS being without Wi-Fi for an extended period. The district shared a statement saying the connectivity issue was related to a student “using malicious software designed to disrupt the system.”

Law enforcement is now investigating.

KPS said their connectivity issues were isolated and are now resolved.

“KPS is grateful for the hard work of our internal technology teams as well as the industry experts and community partners who assisted the district in finding a solution,” leaders wrote in the statement. “We would also like to thank our students and families, as well as our teachers and staff, for their flexibility and understanding during this time.”

The district will not be releasing any further information while the investigation is ongoing.
