Instructure, the tech company behind Canvas recently confirmed suffering a cyber attack by hacker group ShinyHunters in an incident that has put thousands of users’ personal information at risk.
On May 7, schools all across the nation, including San Diego Mesa College, were involved in the cyber attack.
The ShinyHunters hacker group posted a public message claiming that the data of over 9,000 schools and about 275 million individuals have been exposed. The group said it will leak the information by May 12 if schools don’t “negotiate a settlement” with them.
At Mesa College, all Canvas users were asked to log out or exit existing Canvas platforms to avoid potential information leaks. It was also suggested to avoid sharing information on social media platforms in light of the recent attack.
