CLARKESBURG, W.Va. — The Harrison County courthouse and Sheriff’s Department Tax Office was the victim of a cyber security incident. The Harrison County Commission confirmed the incident in a Friday statement, but couldn’t say how severe the breach may have been.

Harrison County Commission recently identified a cybersecurity incident affecting certain systems in our network, and we are taking immediate steps to respond. We have engaged leading external cybersecurity experts to assist and we have notified law enforcement.  This remains an active and ongoing investigation, and it is very early in the process. At this time, we are working to determine the scope and nature of the incident. Because of that, we are not in a position to speculate or confirm specific details.  We understand that incidents like this raise important questions for our community. We are committed to sharing timely and accurate information as we learn more. We appreciate the community’s patience and understanding as this work continues.

A number of people ended up being turned away at the courthouse on Friday as they attempted to pay their property taxes.
